Kimberley Fire Department Announces Slash Pile Burn Plan for Various Areas

The Kimberley Fire Department would like to address plans for the controlled burning of slash piles in and around the city, including those located within Lois Creek, Morrison and Swan Subs and other areas. This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to wildfire mitigation and forest health management.

“In collaboration with local forestry experts and authorities, the City has carefully assessed the conditions for conducting these controlled burns safely and effectively,” says Fire Chief Will Booth. “We understand the importance of timing and weather conditions in ensuring minimal environmental impact and community safety. Therefore, the slash pile burns will only take place when weather conditions allow for controlled and safe operations. The anticipated start date is late October 2023.”

Key Details of the Slash Pile Burning Plan:

  • Timing: The controlled burns will be scheduled at an appropriate time when weather conditions permit. Category 2 fire restrictions must be lifted at which point staff will closely monitor weather forecasts and work in coordination with the BC Wildfire Service to determine the optimal timing.
  • Safety Measures: Safety is the top priority. Trained personnel and firefighting equipment will be on-site during the burns to ensure the safety of both the public and the environment.
  • Public Notification: Prior to each controlled burn, the City will notify residents, park users, and relevant stakeholders about the planned burn date and location. These notifications will be made through the City's website, social media and local media outlets.
  • Smoke Management: Efforts will be made to minimize smoke impacts on nearby residents. Residents can expect low-lying smoke to remain for up to 24-hours.
