Wastewater & Treatment
On December 4th, 2023, it was announced that the City of Kimberley will build a new wastewater treatment plant after a combined investment of more than $90.6 million from the federal, provincial, and municipal governments. Visit our Kimberley Wastewater Treatment Plant page for more information.
The City of Kimberley water system includes 72 kilometres of sanitary sewer lines, with two lift stations, and 36 kilometres of storm sewer mains, with over 700 catch basins.
Sanitary Sewer System
The City of Kimberley sanitary sewer system includes 72 kilometres of sanitary sewer lines, with two lift stations. Once collected, the sewage is treated at our Pollution Control Centre (PCC) located at the confluence of the St. Mary River and Mark Creek.
The PCC offers secondary treatment utilizing the activated sludge method treatment with aerators, digestors, clarifiers and chlorination/de-chlorination system. Average daily flow processed is over 4000 m³ per day. This plant uses the activated sludge process to treat the sewage, and discharges the treated effluent into the St. Mary River. This plant treats all of the sewage from the City of Kimberley including the Marysville area.

Storm Sewer System
The City of Kimberley storm sewer system features over 36 kilometres of storm sewer mains and over 700 catch basins.
Kimberley’s storm sewer system is discharged into various drainage courses that ultimately drain into the St. Mary River.
Experiencing a Sewer Back-Up?
If you are experiencing a sewer back up, please read the “what to look for” section to determine who to call.
What to look for
1. Sewer water comes up only after you have discharged water (e.g. flushing the toilet, draining the sink, running a washing machine, etc.). This indicates a blockage in the sewer service line to the home and you should contact a plumber. A video of the line should be taken if the plumber suspects the problem is with the City’s main line and may be submitted to the Operations desk.
OR
2. Sewer water comes into the basement even if you are not discharging water in your house. This would indicate a possible blockage in the City main line,
Please contact the Operations Department at 250-427-9660 (866-541-0106 after hours).
While the City of Kimberley strives to clean and inspect all sewer main lines regularly, it is still possible for a sewer main to plug up and allow water and sewage to flow into the dwellings it serves. To avoid this unfortunate situation, we recommend that all households install a backflow preventer device on their sewer line to prevent any damage to your residence. Please call the Operations Department for more information at 250.427.9660 or by email at operations@kimberley.ca
Please note that the City of Kimberley Bylaw No. 2415 section 8 reads, “Each owner shall be solely responsible for the installation of the sewer line, backflow preventer and the maintenance of both the sewer line and the service pipe.” (Bylaw 2427, Amnd 1)
The City of Kimberley recommends that all households install a backflow device on their sewer line to prevent any damage to your residence.
