Prescribed Burn Coming to Lois Creek

Posted:

On Sunday, September 8th, 2024, the Kimberley Fire Department, with support from the BC Wildfire Service, will conduct a prescribed burn of approximately 14 hectares northeast of 8th Avenue, near the Lois Creek trail network.

Residents should expect low-lying smoke in the burn area, which may also be visible throughout Kimberley and along Highway 95A. Smoke could linger for several days, depending on weather conditions.

Please avoid the area and follow any posted signage or detours throughout the Lois Creek Trails.

These controlled burns are crucial for reducing the risk of wildfires and protecting our community. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we carry out this important work!

From BC Wildfire Service:

Burning will proceed if conditions are suitable to achieve objectives and allow for smoke dispersal, though smoke may linger in the following days, particularly the morning after burn operations. Despite all precautions to manage it, unintended smoke impacts are possible after any burn.

Key goals of both prescribed burns include:

  • Reduce continuous build-up of fine fuels and woody debris
  • Decrease shrub coverage
  • Reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires in the area

Fire is a normal and natural process in many of B.C.’s ecosystems. The BC Wildfire Service works regularly with land managers to undertake fuel management activities (including the use of prescribed burns), to help achieve land management objectives, reduce the severity of future wildfires and increase ecosystem and wildfire resilience.
